Big data: South Korea wants to optimize use of digital resources of the national health system

Wed, 2018 / 05 / 02
South Korea‘s government has announced fundamental investments in the digitalization of the Korean national health system. A pilot project will start in the first half of this year already to collect genetic and biometric data of some ten million patients in one big database to support research purposes and health initiatives.

The goal is not only to improve conditions for pharmacological research and development of new treatment strategies, but also to predict and identify spreading diseases in an early stage. This project is part of a large South Korean initiative seeking to fully digitalize the national health system, even a personal health care management application for citizens has been announced.

South Korean hospitals widely use advanced IT systems already and these capacities will now be used to the fullest by creating a central bio database. Six hospitals will initially be involved in the project and more will follow to create a national health database if the pilot project is successful. To protect personal data, initial analysis and processing of raw data are planned to be carried out by the participating hospitals, to ensure that only anonymized and statistically relevant data are fed into the database.

The declared goal of the South Korean government is to create 35,000 jobs in the health and medical research sector and reach a global market share of 4% by 2022. Trade minister Paik Un-Gyu stated, that through further deregulations and a phased public funding program, the government would seek to help local pharmaceutical and medical device companies expand into the global market.
