Summary:

The economic burden caused by ANCA-associated vasculitides (AAV), potentially life-threatening autoimmune diseases, was investigated by means of a claims data analysis. In this retrospective study, anonymized, representative longitudinal data were provided by German statutory health insurances and health care aspects of patients with granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) and microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) were systematically investigated. A high hospitalization rate and severe concomitant morbidities, especially kidney involvement, were the main drivers of significantly increased overall costs for patients with GPA or MPA compared to the general population. The claims data analysis confirms the high costs of AAV for the German health care system, and moreover proves to be a reliable method.
